Brakes are one of the most crucial elements for an endurance race vehicle. Not only must the brakes efficiently and reliably slow the vehicle multiple times on each lap, they must last for hours of torturous use. To fulfill the braking demands of the Sidewinder D-MAX Type-R, the latest-generation Wilwood STR (Short Track Radial) Endmass System with 6-piston calipers, pads and rotors was selected. With a target racing weight of 3200 pounds, and a capability of up to 180 mph, proper brake selection and operation determines the ultimate success of the race truck.

Both the front and the rear of Banks’ Sidewinder D-MAX Type-R are fitted with Wilwood SV-GT series directional, staggered-vane rotors designed for maximum cooling, lightweight, endurance, and durability. Specially formulated iron is used to improve heat dissipation while retaining maximum structural stability. The clean-and-sweep action provided by this unique face slot pattern also minimizes any tendencies for irregular pad material build up or smearing over the rotor faces that can contribute to chatter during engagement.

At the front of the vehicle, Wilwood’s STR (Short Track Radial) billet-aluminum calipers are used. These 6-piston calipers accommodate the widest, most thermally efficient rotors and thick pads for endurance. The pistons differentiate pressure loads to compensate for temperature changes over the length of the pads for even application and wear. These radial-mount calipers have been tested and proven under the demanding conditions of NASCAR’s short tracks where brake abuse is at its highest. The rear of Banks’ Sidewinder D-Max Type-R will use Wilwood’s billet-aluminum Superlite SL6R radial-mount calipers. These 6-piston calipers also offer balanced pad loading for even wear. The Banks D-MAX team fabricated the custom mounting brackets for these calipers front and rear.

Wilwood’s PolyMatrix “H” pads have been selected for their high-friction and longwearing qualities. Wilwood’s EXP 600 Plus super high-temperature brake fluid will be used. This is to assure optimum brake performance during endurance events. A lever-style brake-proportioning valve with six pre-sets will be used. This will allow the driver to adjust brake application to changing track and fuel load conditions. These state-of-the-art brake components will provide superior braking capability coupled with optimum driver feel and control.
