A
twin turbocharger system capable of meeting
project power requirements is being engineered
and built. The new twin-turbo arrangement
will use twin Garrett Le Mans-style racing
turbochargers capable of running a 4:1
pressure ratio that translates to up to
44-p.s.i.g. boost. The ball-bearing-style
Garrett turbochargers feature stainless
steel turbine housings and magnesium compressor
housings as well as aluminum compressor
wheels and nickel-based alloy turbine wheels.
A
manifolding system rugged enough to maintain
its structural integrity under the duress
of 24 hours of extremely demanding conditions
is also being built. Banks-designed custom
tube headers will be fabricated from stainless
steel to channel exhaust gases to the twin
Garrett turbos. Electronically controlled
Banks-designed dual wastegates have been
built and finally, a pair of large air-to-air
intercoolers will be used to reduce inlet
air temperatures to provide maximum air
density.
