Banks water-meth controllerThe Banks control interface for both injection systems is simple yet sophisticated. Completely housed in a compact, easily-mounted 2-1/16” gauge head unit, it allows the user to fully command 2 stages of injection for maximum tunability. It also doubles as a multi-function gauge, displaying boost or TPS %, EGT* and pump duty cycle on the digital display, as well as indicating system activity and any errors with the on-board LED (*optional, available when equipped). Universal models contain a high-precision on-board 100 PSIA pressure sensor for boost sensing, while plug-and-play models connect to your factory MAP sensor.


Trigger Options

The system can be configured to inject based on boost pressure, throttle position signal, exhaust gas temperature (EGT), or a combination of either boost or throttle plus EGT. Fully adjustable progressive multiple-stage control allows for fine-tuning when towing or racing; whether you're after mileage improvements, EGT reductions or big power gains. This versatility allows for use on gas, diesel, boosted or normally aspirated applications; It can even be used for external cooling on intercoolers or brake systems!


Versatile Nozzles

The injection nozzles are brass, specifically designed for this application to achieve optimal atomization of water or water-methanol over a wide pressure range. A large 5/8” wrenching hex makes installation a breeze, and a stainless steel screen is integral to keep debris out of the orifice. A range of sizes is provided with each system, with 10 flow rates available to custom-tailor system performance.

Two different pump output volume ratings are available to properly match your engine's needs and offer proper adjustability. Both pumps feature a built-in output pressure switch for low fluid or leak detection, an adjustable re-circulating pressure regulator, integral push-lock fittings and a rubber-isolated mounting bracket for a clean, quiet installation.

The best plumbing available is provided with the highest cross-sectional flow area of any system on the market. Nylon tubing and EPDM seals are methanol compatible and can withstand 300 PSI at underhood temperatures. Installed fittings have 360° swivel capability for full flexibility.

Dual-stage systems include both a low-restriction check valve for the primary stage, as well as a huge, all-stainless 3/16” orifice control solenoid for the second stage - properly sized components minimize pressure drop prior to the nozzle, maximizing output and atomization. The controller will support a second solenoid in place of the check valve for maximum system performance. (Note: Solenoids are optional on Straight-Shot systems)


Plug-and-Play Wiring

No cutting, splicing, and crimping here! The wiring harness is fully connectorized with automotive grade sealed connectors. Designed to plug and play with most factory boosted applications with enough length for virtually any installation configuration. Plug-in extensions and adapters are also available to aid in custom applications.


On-Board DIagnostics

The system is smart enough to detect when wiring, connection or component faults have occurred and will alert you to the problem. The System Safety output allows further action to be taken when the controller detects a fault or low fluid condition.


Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT)

A plug and play EGT sensor is included in the Double-Shot system (and may be added to the Straight-Shot system as an option) to serve as a trigger or auxiliary sensor. When in use, the display can also show EGT. Great option for diesel owners!


Multiple Tanks Sizes Available

Select from 3/4, 2-1/2, 5 or 7 gallon tanks that can be mounted anywhere on your vehicle depending on your specific needs. Or simply plumb the system to run from your existing washer fluid reservoir with the included fitting. (Tanks sold separately)

Water injection has been around almost as long as the internal combustion engine. It was first used to improve power, allow higher compression and save fuel on fighter planes during WWII. Both the Allies and Axis air forces used water injection in some applications. After the war, mechanics and engineers brought the technology to the racetrack. Today, water, or more properly, water-methanol injection, is becoming an acceptable and even common upgrade for diesel and gasoline engines. Lyle Cummins in his book Diesel's Engine: Volume One, states that while Rudolph Diesel didn't invent water (water-methanol) injection, he did call for its use on his engine.

What happens in a water or water-methanol injection system is simple. The injection of these fluids as a mist cools the intake air.

Cooler air means denser air, giving more oxygen for a given volume. This denser air results in more power produced, and the cooler intake charge also helps to reduce EGT and emissions, a more than 50-percent reduction in emissions in some testing.

In addition to increasing power, and reducing EGT in diesel applications, water-methanol injection can also product fuel savings. This is because the power increase comes without an increase in the fuel delivered to the cylinders. Of course, you'll have to resist the urge to push down harder on the accelerator to enjoy the added power more, or you'll lost the mileage edge.

You may be wondering why use a water-meth mix, rather than just water. The truth is, you can use water alone, and some folks do. However, the methanol in the mix has proven to increase power over water alone, and works as an antifreeze too. Consider that about 30-percent methanol lowers the freezing point by 52 degrees F, or down to -20 F. Not only is methanol an antifreeze, it's also a secondary fuel, resulting in higher power gains over water alone.

The latest water-methanol injection system on the market is from Gale Banks Engineering. They actually offer two systems-the Straight-Shot and the Double-Shot. The Straight-Shot is a single-stage system that's perfect for most users. The Double-Shot is a two-stage unit that adds a second-stage water-methanol injection nozzle. The Double-Shot is said to be capable of power gains of 175 hp-plus.

Banks Straight-Shot and Double-Shot systems both come with a digital controller, plug-and-play wiring, the highest volume pump on the market for greater flow and adjustable position injection nozzles. The system trigger options can be set based on boost pressure, throttle position, EGT or a combination of either boost or throttle, plus the EGT. There has even been use of the system, as secondary or additional setups, to cool intercoolers and brakes on race applications.

While there are several water-methanol injection kits on the market today, we couldn't cover them all here. Look for more information on water-methanol injection in future issues of DW. The bottom line is that water-methanol injection improves power and saves fuel. Maybe it's time you consider an upgrade for your vehicle.

California is known for its sunny beaches, Hollywood lifestyle and terrible gas, especially in the winter when the percentage of ethanol increases. So when Sig Jamison, the owner of this '07 BMW 335i, was preparing to ship his car from the East Coast, he made a point to top off the tank with precious 93-octane. At the time, the 335i was running a custom turbo-back exhaust and Cobb 93-octane software which gave, according to Sig, "awesome performance."

As the 335i sucked down its last drop of 93 in California, he knew the party was over and planned to install the Cobb 91-octane program. Although he knew the lower octane would diminish performance, it was the scale of the loss that surprised him.

It wasn't just straight-line power that was down, but he found the BMW was more susceptible to heat soak, had different throttle response, poorer gas mileage and diminished overtaking performance.

Eventually, he removed the Cobb software entirely because he was uncomfortable with how much timing the motor was pulling under acceleration, and that the engine was retarding the ignition timing under full boost. So the 335i returned to stock, leaving Sig slightly bummed.

Fortunately, he moved to sunny SoCal for a new employment opportunity at Banks Engineering - specialists in diesel performance. His arrival couldn't have come at a better time as the engineers were in the process of finalizing development of its StraightShot water/methanol injection system. This would be the solution to restore and enhance the performance of his N54-powered 335i 3.0-liter twin-turbo.

There are a wide variety of products that can help make horsepower and torque; it all comes down to the same principles of more air, more fuel and more spark. Of that combination, introducing more air into the combustion chamber can be the most difficult to achieve, the others can be had with some tuning or a few parts, but increasing air flow can be successfully accomplished in many different ways from using a better air intake to a cam or piston swap. One of the most efficient methods is to increase the air by way of introducing a boost system, whether a turbo or a supercharger.

With trucks, having that instant power and torque on command has made superchargers the most popular choice. The supercharger acts as an air compressor that increase the pressure and density of the air coming through the intake, which makes it possible for more fuel to be burned and helps to make more efficient power. Modifying an engine's timing can adjust the length of time that combustion can take place once a spark is fired by changing the relative angle to the piston and crankshaft. The more timing, the longer combustion is allowed and the more power can be made thanks to the added air and fuel with the supercharger installation. Of course, this can lead down a dangerous path because the timing must be safely altered and not burn up fuel too quickly or engine detonation (engine knock) can occur.

Enter a method to help keep things cool and increase the octane charge to counteract detonation and keep timing at the pre-set degree. Water injection has been around since before World War II when it was used on fighter planes to assist with quicker takeoffs. It's also been noted to offer benefits on diesel applications and boosted gasoline engines as well.

Water-meth injection helps to cool down the combustion chambers when the mixture is injected into the intake air. The mixture of water and methanol alcohol is used because the water provides cooling capabilities and the alcohol provides extra combustion as well as acting as an anti-freeze. The air is cooled and becomes denser, which allows for higher compression, and most importantly in our application, helps curb detonation. Some of the common causes of detonation when running a boosted application can include low octane fuel or bad fuel, not enough fuel and hot weather. To keep this from happening, the engine has knock sensors that will retard the timing to keep things safe but it does result in a los of power. With the injection, the results is a higher octane charge similar to running race fuel, but it will come on only when necessary. It can also help to reduce emissions and improve fuel economy in addition to the power potential. Of course, you aren't simply pouring water into the engine, which would be bad. The mixture atomizes as it hits the air intake tube.

Banks Power is a name that's been synonymous with making power for more than 50 years. Recently, the company has developed the Banks Power Straight-Shot water-methanol injection kit that can be used on both diesels and boosted gasoline applications. The kit includes a universal 2 1/2-gallon reservoir, pump and a pair of nozzles with solenoids. The system is controlled by a small programmer and monitor that fits nicely into a pillar gauge pod. There are two nozzles, the first is 2 gph (gallon per hour) and the second is a 5-gph nozzle, both are installed into the air intake tube behind the throttle body and MAF. The dual nozzles are staged so that the amount of water-meth being injected can be controlled using different-sized nozzles and varied duty cycles. After some dyno testing and tuning at Banks Power in Azusa, California, we got tings dialed in, allowing us to safely add more than 40 horsepower and almost 40 ft-lbs of torque! The installation was topped off with a Banks iQ 2.0 in order to help monitor all of the temperatures, readings and setup alerts. The Banks Power Straight-Shot water-meth kit not only helps to make extra power, but it also safe-guards your engine from possible disaster.

Injecting water and/or methanol into a diesel engine (gas, too) has been around for more than 75 years, but it didn't really have a good, practical application until WWII, when supercharged and turbocharged airplanes used the mix to boost horsepower by at least 50 percent.

Sometimes called "chemical intercooler", the incoming charge of water or a water-methanol mixture cools the air and (when methanol is used) supplies additional fuel. Forced-induction engines in particular benefit from a boost of water-methanol. And that's why turbocharged diesel engines respond so favorably to it.

Banks Power is always pushing the envelope in its testing, and lately water-methanol has been the object of much scrutiny. "It's a bit like crack," says Gale Banks, the iconic leader of Banks Power, located in Azusa, California. What he meant was that the effects were instantaneous, and the user, once exposed, wants more and more and more.

After lots of engineering and testing, the Banks crew has come out with complete water-methanol systems for specific vehicles, plus universal kits that can be adapted to work in a variety of circumstances. Some people really want the horsepower boost while others are excited about the fuel economy gains. Still others just want to reduce exhaust gas temperature when towing a load. Water-methanol injection can help out in a lot of areas.

The StraightShot and DoubleShot water-methanol injection systems from Banks Power can add up to 200 hp when used with additional tuning (such as the Banks AutoMind) and up to 175 hp just by itself. The Banks kit comes with a digital controller, plug-and-play harness, calibrated injector assemblies, low-restriction check valves, massive flow control solenoids, a heavy-duty pump, and more. There is complete user adjustability of two independent stages of injection based on boost, throttle position sensor, exhaust gas temperature (some trucks require an optional EGT sensor), or a combination of these.

There are two pumps available: The low-volume pump is sufficient to support up to 750 hp for gasoline applications and can add up to 90 flywheel hp in diesel. The high-volume pump can support up to 1,250 hp for gasoline applications and can add up to 175 flywheel hp in diesel.

We watched as the Banks crew installed a StraightShot kit on an '07 Dodge 6.7L. The rwhp peak improved from 284 in stock condition to 387 with a 50/50 mix of water and methanol. That was with the pump running at 100 percent duty cycle. This system is very configurable by the user.

It may seem too good to be true, but injecting a mix of water and methanol into a diesel engine can increase horsepower and torque, improve fuel economy, and lower exhaust gas temperature (EGT) and NOx emissions. The "magic" happens when the additives super-cool the intake charge so the fuel can be burned more completely (along with the addition of some extra hydrocarbon molecules). This trickery is how you get more power without using more diesel fuel.

The team at Banks Power has dyno-tested their new StraightShot water-methanol injection system and found it can add up to 120 hp and 185 lb-ft of torque to a 6.7L Power Stroke with stock programming.
