KEY FEATURES

  • Engineered for the best heat rejection, improved oil flow and full oil drainage
  • Adds 2 additional quarts of oil capacity
  • FlowThru Fins® efficiently transfer heat through the cover
  • 86.1% more cooling surface area than stock
  • Does not hang lower than factory front cross member
  • Unlike stock, allows full engine oil drainage

CoolRunner Oil Pan will work with AT4 skid plate package.
CoolRunner Oil Pan will work with AEV skid plates.

Fitment Alert – Lifted Trucks

Adequate clearence is needed between the front cross member/drop bracket to allow the removal and reinstallation of the Banks Cool Runner Oil Pan.
Bracket 1 Fits
Bracket 2 Fits
Bracket 3 Does Not Fit

Lift kit drop brackets that mount to the front differential may require removal to provide access to the oil pan. Other drop brackets may contact the Cool Runner Oil Pan and prevent installation entirely when there is not enough clearence between the front differential mount and oil pan.

If the distance (H) from the lowest point of the OEM oil pan to the cross member is less than 10” you will not have enough space to remove the stock pan without removing the drop bracket. The bracket must be removed and reinstalled in order to provide adequate clearance to install a Banks Cool Runner Oil Pan around the oil pickup tube.

Reference your lift kit installation guide for specifics on how to remove the drop bracket as the torsion bars are under load.

Why It's Better

Engineered to Cool Motor Oil

The Banks CoolRunner Oil Pan for the 2017-2019 Duramax out-performs and out-cools the competition by leveraging decades of racing and military engine development.

Banks Power,L5P CoolRunner,L5P Oil Pan
Banks CoolRunner Oil Pan, Technical Features

• 19 deep-cut huge external radiator fins provide more surface area to the cool air moving under the truck.

• The die-cast process provides a smoother interior surface which improves oil flow to the pickup tube and drain.

• A smooth, streamlined area around the oil pickup with an engineered anti-cavitation dimple improves oil flow to the pump by reducing restriction at the filter inlet.

• 15 internal fins absorb more heat from the oil than a stock or any other aftermarket pan.

Banks proprietary FlowThru Fins® maximize thermal energy transfer by lining up the internal and external features with each other.

Banks CoolRunner Oil Pan, Technical Features

Engine heat is efficiently drawn from the sump where the hottest oil rests. Cooler oil retains the proper viscosity, which means metal-on-metal surfaces remain properly lubricated.

Banks CoolRunner Oil Pan, Technical Features, Internal, 2020

With more internal heat absorption surface area and more external heat radiation surface area, your motor oil stays within its optimum operating temperature, which prevents oxidation or breakdown even when hauling up a grade.

Oil Flow Improvements

The CoolRunner oil pan features a 1/8" NPT port for an auxiliary temp sensor, is able to hold an additional two quarts of oil compared to stock, and allows for complete oil drain free from the sludge known to stay within the stock pan.

Banks Power,L5P CoolRunner,Sump Detail, 2020

Unlike competitors, which feature small grooves that run against the oil's return flow and disrupt the oil pickup tube's action, the CoolRunner's deep fins properly direct fluid to the oil pickup.

Banks Power,L5P CoolRunner,Anti-Cavitation

The area under the oil pickup tube features a unique anti-cavitation dimple which smoothly redirects oil flow upwards.

CAD Cross section of Factory vs Banks CoolRunner Oil pan

The factory pan uses drain plug that threads into a welded bung that protrudes inwards. This bung blocks oil from completely draining once it hits the top of the threaded bung.

Thanks to a high static oil level, pressure on the pickup tube inlet prevents oil from escaping during an oil change. This leaves almost half a quart of liquid sandpaper in your engine

Sealing Enhancements

Duramax oil pans use an RTV-style liquid gasket that must fully seal to prevent leaks. Poorly designed pans with an improper sealing surface can result in leaks or damage from strands of RTV falling in, clogging the oil pickup tube, or jamming the pump.

Wide view of CoolRunner Squeeze Gap
Close CAD render of Stock vs Banks vs PPE Squeeze Gap

Borrowing from decades of reliable military development, the CoolRunner uses an OE-style full-length squeeze gap that runs the entire inner perimeter of the pan. This precision-machined feature prevents small RTV strands from breaking off, falling into the sump, and damaging your engine.

Die-Cast vs Sandcast

All Banks lubrication cooling products are die-cast, not sand-cast like competitors. Made with far greater precision, a die-cast part is denser, smoother, and has virtually no porosity compared to the equivalent sand-cast part.

Wide view of CoolRunner Squeeze Gap
Real world example of rough cast surface

Sand-cast parts often retain the sand they were molded with. Sand is an abrasive material that is bad for bearings and cylinder walls. In other words, you don’t want sand in your oil. Finally, our long, thin cooling fins are only possible with a die-cast process. Although this process costs more, it's worth it.

Fluid Dynamics
  • Internal cooling fins run inline with the drain port with streamlined passageways
  • Anti-Cavitation dimple directly under oil pickup improves oil flow rate
  • Downward facing port eases oil change process
  • Low fluid aeration means longer fluid life

L5P oil pan

"Had my local dealership install this pan as I did not want to attempt dropping the front differential. Drained oil that was put in after installation and refilled with AMSOIL and PPE filter. So far and happy with the results."

Matt S. (5/5)

It can be done!

"Turns out the Banks Power oil pan can be installed on a 2021 GMC Sierra 2500HD diesel with a BDS suspension aka. Breaker 3 despite what they say. To be fair, I actually understand why Banks tells the average backyard mechanic it won’t fit, and I don’t blame them. This is not a quick bolt-on job. What looks like a half-day project quickly turns into about a day and a half once you realize you’re practically removing and reinstalling the entire front suspension just to make it happen."

A-aron M. (5/5)

Nice product!! Makes oil changes

"Nice product!! Makes oil changes a breeze!! Also made plumbing and installation of bypass filter a breeze"

Brian B. (5/5)

The best oil pen recommendation

"The best oil pen recommendation 100% the truck ronin more better"

juan f. (5/5)

Great Pan , installed on 2024 GMC 2500HD AT4

"This was by far the most time consuming product ( from all three pans - Trans, Rear diff and Oil pan) as a result of the original GMC pan was nightmare to remove. The sealant on the original pan really made removal so difficult to remove. To remove the pan, there is absolute minimum space, which consumed a few hours of time (just a head up to those who tackle this project). The tool banks provided was not used as there is no space to use a mallet to impact (so you must be creative and don't damaged the sealing surface of the block). Once the pan was removed, a lot of time was spent to fully remove the remaining sealant and clean the surface. New pan was installed , no leaks and the this looks really nice."

Joe H. (5/5)

performs as Banks said it will

"This oil pan is everything Banks says it is. very pleased with its performance. watch the installation video and be prepared to spend most of you time removing the OEM pan and cleaning off the RTV. The second day of the four job I finally succeeded with using a putty knife and hammer to break the RTV and pull the OEM pan off."

chris m. (5/5)

coolrunner oil pan and trans pan

"still have snow on the ground will be installing in warmer weather I like the quality and craftsmanship of both pans I have other banks (dif cover, cold air intake, boost tube kit, turbo inlet elbow, derringer, pedal monster) on it already and liking it all. I also did it to my 08, 15 and now my 22 GMC 3500"

Stephen K. (5/5)

Hello. So this really isn’t

"Hello. So this really isn’t a review but when I talked to the Chevrolet dealer here they said this will probably void my warranty. So I need to see if I can return my purchase. But I can’t seem to talk to anyone there. I’ve called twice now and haven’t been able to talk to anyone. My number is 208-791-0899"

Darrel B. (5/5)

Banks all the way

"Banks really provided everything you need new hardware, three bond and the caulking gun, even the tool to assist in the semi brutal task of getting the stock pan off. Attention to detail on the pan makes you know they care. Maybe banks could donate some of their engineers to GM so trucks could be built with perfection in mind. Highly recommended and I’ll be purchasing the trans pan and diff cover in the future"

Blair W. (5/5)

My pans and rear cover

"Got all 3 oil, trans,& rear cover. . great instructional videos. . I diy’ed it and had no issues with the installation, with no prior duramax experience."

Q&A

i have the mcgauphys 7-9" lift on my 24 gmc sierra 2500hd. the bracket i have LOOKS like the one that doesnt fit. but they also make a 4" kit with a shorter lift. trying to find out if this fits before ordering it.
Unfortunately it won't work with that lift kit. the pan is simply too close to the crossmember
By installing this oil pan will it void the factory warranty?
Hey, thanks for messaging us. The stance on aftermarket parts varies widely from dealer to dealer. This is why we suggest consulting with your dealer to learn how they choose to enforce Stellantis' warranty policies. Generally speaking, there are three types of dealerships. 1. Dealers that embrace and install performance upgrades. 2. Dealers who will overlook an aftermarket part because they know it's harmless. 3. Dealers who are militant about aftermarket accessories and will deny a warranty. You'll find dealers across the US and Canada that sell and install oil pans. You'll also find dealerships that will encourage you to keep the vehicle stock. In the case of the oil pans, keeping it, stock could prove to be a costly decision if the transmission fails.
How will or how should this read on the factory dipstick after installing will it show low or show more.
After installing the CoolRunner Oil Pan, it will read stock on the dip stick.
What is the cure time of the gasket material once the new pan is installed? After installation should the engine not be started until the allotted time has elapsed? Will this pan work on a 2025 Silverado 2500? According to the installation instructions it states this pan is for a 2020 - 2024?
Cure time for the RTV is 24hrs. DO NOT START THE ENGINE for this time period. as there is no oil in the pan. This pan is available for the 2025 trucks.
In the video the gentleman mentioned that GM uses 11 qts of oil from the factory and then requires 10qts for every oil change because the stock pan leaves 1qt of oil. This Banks pan holds 2 more qts of oil, but is that 2 more than 10 or 2 more than 11? When I change the oil with this pan will I need to use 12 or 13 qts of oil? Thank you.
With this oil pan installed, you will need 13qts of oil.
