About This Product
Derringer features 6 power levels adjustable on-the-fly. Interfaces with OBD-II (On-Board Diagnostics) to communicate with the vehicle's ECM. AutoRate uses vehicle data to adjust tune in real-time. ActiveSafety protects engine/powertrain. TransCommand protects transmission. For use with existing iDash DataMonster or iDash SuperGauge.
Specifications

Results in torque and power gains across the full operating rpm range, starting right off idle and marching to the shift point in each gear. Derringer is dyno calibrated to use multiple data inputs such as throttle position, rpm, vehicle speed, AFR, knock, coolant temperature, and EGT, just like your engine's ECM. It actively and safely optimizes calibrations in real-time thanks to its OBD-II connectivity. No competitive tuner does that.

Derringer has 6 levels, adjustable on-the-fly using the iDash. Level 6 produces best-in-class performance. Level 3 is designed for work use and has a great mid-range feel. When running Level 3 with a loaded truck and/or pulling a trailer, your on-ramp merging speeds and passing times are greatly improved.

The electronics are enclosed in a compact housing which is easily concealed and communicates with other Banks devices such as our iDash DataMonster, iDash SuperGauge, and PedalMonster throttle booster. The Derringer connects in line with your truck's engine sensors. But unlike other tuners, it also connects to the vehicle's OBD-II diagnostic bus.

ActiveSafety health monitoring circuitry keeps an eye on the vehicle and the module itself. It checks its health 100 times a second. If it detects an issue, the Derringer instantly bypasses itself, sets a device diagnostic code, and seamlessly returns the truck to stock power. Plus, Derringer's special coolant temp monitoring prevents power addition when the engine is too cold or overheated. The Derringer also auto-adjusts power if knock occurs due to bad fuel. Maximum safe power is all automatic with a Derringer — you just choose your preferred power level and enjoy the ride.

Why It's Better

A Tuner Above The Rest

The Derringer is dyno calibrated to use multiple data inputs such as throttle position, rpm, vehicle speed, AFP, knock, coolant temperature, and EGT, just like your engine's ECM.

It actively and safely optimizes calibrations in real-time thanks to its OBD-II connectivity while providing huge performance gains, all while keeping your factory ECM happy, temperatures under control, and transmission safe.

No competitive tuner does that.

Power and Safety

Derringer has 6 levels, adjustable on-the-fly using the iDash. Level 6 produces best-in-class performance, while Level 3 is for work use with great mid-range feel with a loaded truck and/or pulling a trailer.

Banks ActiveSaftey® features combines mechannical fail-safe measures to revert to stock in the case of failure, while also intelligently adding power based on vehicle operating conditions such as cold or hot coolent tempos or knocking from bad fuel.

The Derringer is the only tuner that actually utilizes your truck’s ECM to make intelligent calculations.

Horsepower Gains

Banks vs The Rest

The other guys claim big numbers on paper but simply don't deliver in the real world! We tested every other tuner on the same dyno, same day, same weather, and same technician. All they do is add fuel with no aditional air.

That’s where all the others fall short, infact power can even be reduced under load as the tuner box and factory ECM fight each other over rising Exhaust Temps and unsafe power delivery.

Torque Gains

Test Vehicle Used: 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 Dually 6.6L Duramax L5P. Factory intake and exhaust. All tests run on the same truck, same day, same conditions. Tested on Mustang DYNO, 10-second sweep

Get What You Pay For

Dont waste your money on competitive products offering cheap thrills that only dump fuel into the engine with no added air.

Invest in quality backed by engineering. When you compare the power gains per dollar spent, there is no question who offers the highest smile per dollar ratio.

Consistent Power Delivery

The real-world benefits of powerful tuning done safely and reliably really show when you’re hauling a heavy load.

You do not want a cheap tuner that only adds fuel to the engine with no added air. That is just a one-way ticket to soot and high EGTs on your engine.

AutoRate® Dynamic Tuning

• Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) — Monitors EGT and intelligently modulates fueling to maintain a safe maximum EGT, protecting your turbo and engine.

• Altitude compensation — Senses ambient air pressure, controlling the turbocharger to maintain added boost and power as altitude increases.

• Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) Regen — Monitors your DPF regen status to ensure the process completes successfully.

• Accelerator Pedal Monitoring — Rolls in additional power progressively, optimizing for both part-throttle fuel economy and max power when you ask for it.

• Full Power Timer — Allows for 30 seconds of wide-open throttle before transitioning to the recommended power level for sustained tow/haul.

Derringer Wiring Diagram Example

• Coolant Temperature Monitoring — Maintains safe power based on coolant temp.

  • • During warmup, no power is added below 120° F
  • • Power ramps in & fully available above 150° F
  • • If the coolant overheats for any reason, the Derringer starts removing its power at 230° F
  • • Additional power is totally removed if you exceed 240° F

TransCommand® Active Transmission Safety System

The Derringer is calibrated to modulate power during shifting while ramping up hydraulic pressure for better engagement. Competitors lack OBD-II data and always add power at wide-open throttle causing excessive transmission, clutch, and torque converter slip and damage.

• Intelligent Shift Tuning — Shift signal is optimized for the power level protecting the transmission, increasing shift speed, and avoiding ECM power derates.

• Tuned Hydraulic Pressure —Ramps hydraulic pressure faster than stock, maintaining engagement as power is added safely within factory limits.

• Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) Monitoring —Adjusts TCC slip to safe levels, lowering fluid temperature, and preventing extended wear.

  • Calibration is tuned for optimum traction and performance providing the right firmness of shift automatically.

• Transmission Slip Monitoring - Light throttle shifts remain smooth and firm, full-throttle shifts are solid and decisive.

  • This reduction in slip time also improves acceleration performance, an added benefit!

Allison 6 speed transmission

ActiveSafety® Health Monitoring

The Derringer is the only tuner available that includes Active Safety® health monitoring circuitry.

Internal diagnostics check system 100 times per second.

Checks MAP and FRP signals and monitors CPU activity

Activates in event of failure or loss of 12V power
Bypass relays smoothly return stock power with no loss of power or "Limp Home" Mode.

Banks Derringer/Pedal Monster 2019 L5P

"Just installed both the Derringer and Pedal Monster and should have a long time ago! Trucks overall performance has improved greatly as well as the acceleration! I would highly recommend!"

Mike D. (5/5)

Well worth the money spent

"2018 GMC Sierra 2500HD Denali DMAX plus package L5P. Did a lot of research and decided to go with the Banks Derringer and Idash data monster. installation was pretty straightforward thanks to the excellent install sheet provided by Banks. Noticeable difference in power after installing the combo. So far I have not gone past level 3 and can feel the difference in power. Will do some testing with Level 6 shortly. Took about an hour drive with average speed about 55MPH and I was averaging a little over 21MPG on the trip. This was just the truck not towing anything. Money well spent and the range of things you can do with the Idash is amazing. I also purchased a pedal monster and will leave a separate review on it. This really woke up the L5P. Thank you Banks Engineering!"

Derringer + PedalMonster

"When engineering is priority #1, this is the level of product you receive! As a prior mechanical engineer and now software developer, I can be picky on product design and implementation. Banks sets the standard. From documenting details for installation and creating solutions that are not only plug n play but also provide any special tools or accessories. From the stepped drill bit for the iDash gauge mount, zip ties, ball end allen key, truly matched connectors to the factory harness, length of cables to accommodate routing options, these 3 products integrate and install as 1 unit. Read the instructions, watch the videos provided by Banks, and maybe browse some personal installation on YouTube. From there, I fully understood the whole scope. I did not need to reference any instruction after that. I disassembled everything, drilled the 1 whole required for the pod mount, and starting plugging and routing. Finished the full installation and reassembly in under 2 hours. Thats how well thought out the setup is. They claim 3hrs just for the Derringer. 1 note for those reading, if installing the Derringer and Pedalmonster, the 1 cable that routes into the cab from the Derringer now plugs to the Pedalmonster. Then 1 cable from the Pedalmonster and the one from the ODB2 port runs up the pillar to the iDash gauge. The throttle response is amazing! It feels like a whole different truck. On Sport pedalmonster and Derringer Lvl 6 with their CAI, the truck wakes up even with the DEF system. The amount of on-the-fly control, diagnostics, gauge options, and customization would take too long to list. I have 2 custom pages to monitor temps, boost, DEF soot%, re-gen status, RPM, gear, HP/TQ, etc. Not sure how accurate the calculations are, but on a 0-80 full throttle, it read 953tq and 505hp. Turbo inlet and intercooler tubes are in the garage and will be installed shortly. Highly recommend this setup for any L5P Duramax owner!"

Robert H. (5/5)

Loving it

"I have been running the derringer/pedal monster combo on my 17 L5P for a couple years and have zero complaints. I have a competitors product still sitting in the box for over a year, planned on doing a comparison review and just dont know if I trust anyone else to add max hp to what my trans can handle safely. Banks has that covered"

Banks Daringer and pedal monster.

"Install only took around 45 min. That is for both derringer and pedal monster. These are a game changer for a stk truck. Fun to play with different settings and you can tell watch setting is different. This products quality is remarkable. If you are looking for a great reliable product Banks is the place to get it. Everything I researched it all came back to them and what they advertised is spot on. Looking forward to trying more of their products. Thanks Banks!"

Brittney C. (5/5)

Completely worth the money!!

"The tuner is a great product. Easy install and definitely can tell the power difference. I also installed iDash with the pedal monster. The throttle response is amazing and the gauge has great functions. My 2018 chevy duramax perform like a completely different vehicle. A must have."

Troy N. (5/5)

Awesome product

"This is so sweet not sure how else to say it. Only minor issue was I didn’t realize I need the 6pin extension to connect to my pedal monster but it’s ok. So much fun to use and amazing how it makes my tank get up and go!"

Q&A

Can I purchased the "wiring harness" by itself?
Yes, this harness can be purchased separately via phone. Please reach out to our Sales Team at (800) 601-8072.
If you are running down the highway at a steady speed and the derringer is on 6 will your fuel economy go down instead of stock setting or set at 2 or3?
The Derringer was designed to deliver power when you need it. It was not designed to increase fuel economy. Therefore, we do not advertise fuel economy gains. Fuel economy depends on many variables including how you drive. That being said, in level 6, you are commanding more fuel and boost so there is a chance the fuel economy will take a hit.
