Cold Weather Starting Recommendations

The Banks Dual-Heat Upgrade Kit is designed around RAM’s block heating recommendations.

RAM recommends the use of a block heater at 0°F/-17°C and mandates its use at -20°F/-29°C. Failure to follow these instructions could lead to premature wear and/or failure of key components, including pistons, rings, and cylinder walls.

Cold Start Test Criteria

We followed RAM's cold start recommendations. Per the owner’s manual, RAM recommends the use of the block heater when the temperature drops below 0°F/-17°C and mandates the block heater at temperatures below -20°F/-29°C.

Using a controlled climate chamber, our first test utilized block heat and two Banks coil heaters (1500 watts total). The Monster-Ram® enabled our test truck to cold start down to -30°F/-34°C.

Against RAM’s recommendations, we also attempted to cold start with the same two coil heaters and no block heat. We were able to cold start down to -20°F/-29°C. Adding a third coil heater (2,250 watts total), the truck started at -30°F/-34°C.*

All tests were performed with two intake air pre-heat cycles per the owner’s manual. Intake air temperature is just one factor contributing to a successful cold start. Individual results may vary depending on your vehicle’s age and overall condition. Testing is ongoing with a detailed video forthcoming.

*Battery boosting may be required for sufficient cranking RPM.

"Bought the dual for the Canadian winters. With the 2 zero issue with 1 pass. The upgrade is quality made and has an impressive look. Awesome!"

Dual heater install

"My neighbor who is a professional mechanic installed this heater upgrade in about 15 minutes. It was pretty straight forward and low stress to do. I have a 2011 Ram 3500 6. 7 Cummins with 112,000 + miles on it."

Norman K. (5/5)

Still lying on my dash

"Did not realize I had a single heater horn. So it sits on my dash until Banks will sell me just a double heater horn. I’m not interested in the pre EGR ring that has to be removed each Spring and installed each Fall because it reduces airflow. My truck will not start below 32 degrees Fahrenheit without being plugged and even then it struggles every morning. Very frustrating. Tim Schreyer. Daniel, Wyoming"

No problem starting in cold weather

"After installing the double coils, the truck has no problem starting in cold weather. Sub zero and no problem!"

Finally, No Intake Air Heater Code!

"I installed the Monster Ram with the single heater coil a couple of years ago. My Cummins would trip an intake air heater code with check engine light whenever the temperature dropped to around 30 F. I just installed the 1500 W billet kit a few weeks ago and have not had the intake air heater code come back. It's parked outside overnight and the temps have been in the lower 20s. Finally, nice add on!"
