HOW TO INCREASE COLD START HEAT
HOW TO INCREASE COLD START HEAT

The extra heat does the trick up here in Alaska.

  George G — Anchorage, AK

Why You Need It

Add the Banks 750 or 1500 Watt Heater Upgrade Kit to your Monster-Ram® for cold-weather starts as low as -30°F/-34°C with block heat and -20°F/-29°C without block heat.

Why It's Better

  • Improves Cold Weather Start
  • Helps with cold-weather starts as low as -30°F/-34°C with block heat and -20°F/-29°C without block heat

Built To Survive

This simple bolt-on kit requires no maintenance. Unlike the factory Cummins grid heater, which can fail and destroy your engine, Banks coil heaters are designed to fail safely, avoiding catastrophic engine damage.

Cold Weather Starting Recommendations

The Banks Dual-Heat Upgrade Kit is designed around RAM’s block heating recommendations.

RAM recommends the use of a block heater at 0°F/-17°C and mandates its use at -20°F/-29°C. Failure to follow these instructions could lead to premature wear and/or failure of key components, including pistons, rings, and cylinder walls.

Cold Start Test Criteria

We followed RAM's cold start recommendations. Per the owner’s manual, RAM recommends the use of the block heater when the temperature drops below 0°F/-17°C and mandates the block heater at temperatures below -20°F/-29°C.

Using a controlled climate chamber, our first test utilized block heat and two Banks coil heaters (1500 watts total). The Monster-Ram® enabled our test truck to cold start down to -30°F/-34°C.

Against RAM’s recommendations, we also attempted to cold start with the same two coil heaters and no block heat. We were able to cold start down to -20°F/-29°C. Adding a third coil heater (2,250 watts total), the truck started at -30°F/-34°C.*

*Battery boosting may be required for sufficient cranking RPM.

Testing down to -40°

All tests were performed with two intake air pre-heat cycles per the owner’s manual. Intake air temperature is just one factor contributing to a successful cold start. Individual results may vary depending on your vehicle’s age and overall condition.

4/5 stars

"Form fit and function are a 5 out of 5. It looks great and instal of the components fit and was easy to understand. The only thing I had an issue with is torquing the bolts of the monster ram to the intake. The tool that was included stripped out and I had to find one to work and I ordered an extra coil heater and it didn’t come with the bolt for the heater cable. Other than that I love the product"

Tommy W. (4/5)

2 coils

"I decided to add a second heater coil in my monster ram. I live in colder weather climate in the winter. Now that it is getting colder I am thinking I will put the 3rd in as well. It is taking a little longer than I thought to warm up before starting my pickup. I am glad I purchased a second however."

Jim C. (5/5)

Heater UP grade kit

"Right now, I have no complaints. The Heater kit is working just fine, nothing is wrong. I wish Banks would make a Tranny cooler for a AISN Transmission. I drive a 2017 Ram Diesel (SLT) 3500. What can you do for me?"

Brian S. (5/5)

customer still happy with the up grade

"I am a mechanic and I turned a friend of mine on to look at the reasons he should do this up grade, almost a year later, he still brags about how much better his truck works from new."

thom m. (5/5)

New heating element

"The element works as it should. The 4 stars come from the installation front. The bolt that holds the spade connector kept coming lose no matter how tight we made it. We fixed it by using a lot of lock tight."

Nicolas B. (4/5)

Perfect product

"The product is built well. The installation was straight forward and seamless. Highly recommend."

John B. (5/5)

Heater upgrade kit added to Banks intake preheater

"Replaced OEM heater with two Banks heater coils, has place for three if I ever move to Fairbanks."

Sally S. (5/5)

It's not cold enough for

"It's not cold enough for it to matter right now but it's around the corner"

Cliff B. (5/5)

Glow plug heater

"Heater works great. Had to put 2 in the monster ram due to living in Vermont. Starts up nice and smoth"

Peter B. (5/5)

No drag start

"No drag in cranking on cold days. Monster Ram need to be a dealer option."
