Cold Start Test Criteria

We followed RAM's cold start recommendations. Per the owner’s manual, RAM recommends the use of the block heater when the temperature drops below 0°F/-17°C and mandates the block heater at temperatures below -20°F/-29°C.

Using a controlled climate chamber, our first test utilized block heat and two Banks coil heaters (1500 watts total). The Monster-Ram® enabled our test truck to cold start down to -30°F/-34°C.

Against RAM’s recommendations, we also attempted to cold start with the same two coil heaters and no block heat. We were able to cold start down to -20°F/-29°C. Adding a third coil heater (2,250 watts total), the truck started at -30°F/-34°C.*

All tests were performed with two intake air pre-heat cycles per the owner’s manual. Intake air temperature is just one factor contributing to a successful cold start. Individual results may vary depending on your vehicle’s age and overall condition. Testing is ongoing with a detailed video forthcoming.

*Battery boosting may be required for sufficient cranking RPM.

Awesome upgrade for 1st gen Monster Ram owners.

"Great product. I’ve had the original monster Ram for a few years now. I live in Northern Ontario, Canada. Better cold starts now for sure. Instructions were decent, a couple things were missing but I figured it out. Plus it’s WAAAY easier to install the new bolts with the drivers side fender liner removed, and some extensions on your ratchet. It’s next to impossible if you try and do it from under the hood. Thanks to Banks for making this for the people out there who already have 1st gen Monster Rams."

I own the monster ram

"I own the monster ram intake original with 1 spiral heater. I fear not starting in the negative 10to40 degrees Fahrenheit range. I follow dark iron diesel and Banks Power. Banks addressed the problem and offered a super solution i now have 3 spiral heaters 2300 watts of heating power I'm now good to =50to=100. Thank you Gale Banks!! And Dark Iron!"

Chad W. (5/5)

Another great product

"Banks is, hands down, one of the best companies in the diesel industry—across all platforms. From their highly knowledgeable staff to their top-tier products, everything they build is designed to improve performance while increasing the longevity of your truck. It’s rare to find a company in any industry so committed to engineering parts that truly last. What really sets Banks apart is their unmatched understanding of diesel trucks as a whole—they know your truck better than anyone else out there, often going deeper into the data and performance than even the manufacturers themselves."

David A. (5/5)

Good quality part. I had

"Good quality part. I had to buy this piece after I installed the banks intake. The intake I bought last year only had 1 750 watt coil heater. My truck would not start with just 1 750 watt heater in 20 degrees. Once this was delivered to me and I installed it. My truck has no problems starting. It got down to 3 degrees and it fired right up."

Michael W. (4/5)

No More Intake Temp Code/Check Engine Light

"The single heater coil was insufficient and would trip intake heater temp code often when the outside temp fell below 40 F here in Utah. I added the 1500 watt billet single coil a month ago and haven't had any intake heater codes or check engine light tripped since. Highly recommend addition."

Bruce L. (5/5)

750w billet heater

"Works great! As advertised! I had to buy different cap head bolts than the ones supplied because I have a spacer in place of the throttle body. Could you try and make the threaded post on top of the heater itself thicker? That thing is scary thin. Other than that, no complaints."

Mervin E. (5/5)

Bring On The Cold Weather

"1500W Billet Heater Kit Engineering and build quality are exceptionally high. In my experience this is normal for all Banks products. Installation is straight forward if you follow the directions. Watch the video, especially the part that tells you which bolt to start first. Installation is not difficult, but access is limited so you'll be working by feel part of the time. Take your time, don't rush. If I can do it, you can do it."

Mark B. (5/5)

Definitely helped

"It definitely helped. I have the single 750 intake, added another 750. Cycle twice when temps are 15 degrees and under. No issues to at least zero so far. Installation was a head ache, many cuss words and a couple cut knuckles. But in the end, clean installation and it works as advertised."

jason m. (5/5)

1500 watt heater

"Heater works great. The only problem I had during the installation was finding the right size bolts. I had to find 55 mm bolts due the throttle body being deleted."

Stephen D. (5/5)

Not a hard installation.

"I've got a 2010 and was getting the P2609 error code because the algorithm on my truck (up through 2012 I think) is looking for a higher amp draw than one coil will pull and it will throw the code if the temp is below about 45 degrees and the block heater is not used, so Banks sent me the one coil kit for free. Installation not hard, but a couple of things will make it easier. 1. Take the rubber boost tube completely out. I mean get it out of the engine compartment all together. It comes out very easily, one more clamp up by the lower radiator on the driver side, that's it. It goes back in easily too. Makes taking the four bolts a lot easier, and makes in stalling the ones a lot easier too. The bolt behind the throttle body sensor is still a pain, but not as bad as it would be with the boot in. 2. If you bought the adhesive spray when you instilled the original Monster Ram, use it on the two gaskets. 3. I actually loosely put in the ground bracket to hold the billet in place while putting in the first two bolts. Helped quite a bit."

Q&A

Will this work with the older generations 4 inch?
It really depends on the version, Older versions with the coupler wont work, but newer versions with the bolt on body will.
Can I add this on to a factory 2017 Cummins intake horn?
The included TMAP relocation kit is not supported by the OEM intake as well as some wiring and dimension issues. It can only be used on Single and Dual heater Monster-Ram's
I see in the images this bolts directly to the existing ram intake horn, and appears the bolts are long enough for that. Are different bolts going to be needed to bolt through this spacer and throttle body? I'm guessing extra needed gasket is not included as well?
For additional support, please contact our tech support team at 800-601-8072, opt 4 for assistance.
I have your banks monster ram horn kit in my 2020 6.7 Cummins Now you upgraded to accept a 2nd Heater coil. The update for my set up is the spacer with the heater Installed in that. Will this cause air restriction and air turbulence?
Of all available heating elements, the coil heater design is the least restrictive per our tests. It's important to note that only small number of Monster-Ram owners need this upgrade for extreme cold. For non-winter months, the Billet Heater Kit can be un-installed in minutes.
