L5P oil pan
"Very high quality product. Excellent instructions hardware and sealant included."
Banks CoolRunner Oil Pan utilizes technology from our military engine program to extend oil life. The system rejects more heat and reduces aeration better than stock and all competitors. Two additional quarts of oil and Banks FlowThru Fins® aid in cooling. Unlike stock, the CoolRunner allows all fluid to drain during oil changes.
The Banks CoolRunner Oil Pan for the 2017-2019 Duramax outperforms and outcools the competition by leveraging decades of racing and military engine development.
• 19 deep-cut huge external radiator fins provide more surface area to the cool air moving under the truck.
• The die-cast process provides a smoother interior surface which improves oil flow to the pickup tube and drain.
• A smooth, streamlined area around the oil pickup with an engineered anti-cavitation dimple improves oil flow to the pump by reducing restriction at the filter inlet.
• 15 internal fins absorb more heat from the oil than a stock or any other aftermarket pan.
Banks' proprietary FlowThru Fins® maximize thermal energy transfer by lining up the internal and external features with each other.
Engine heat is efficiently drawn from the sump where the hottest oil rests. Cooler oil retains the proper viscosity, which means metal-on-metal surfaces remain properly lubricated.
With more internal heat absorption surface area and more external heat radiation surface area, your motor oil stays within its optimum operating temperature, which prevents oxidation or breakdown even when hauling up a grade.
The CoolRunner oil pan features a 1/8" NPT port for an auxiliary temp sensor, is able to hold an additional two quarts of oil compared to stock, and allows for complete oil drain free from the sludge known to stay within the stock pan.
Unlike competitors, which feature small grooves that run against the oil's return flow and disrupt the oil pickup tube's action, the CoolRunner's deep fins properly direct fluid to the oil pickup.
The area under the oil pickup tube features a unique anti-cavitation dimple which smoothly redirects oil flow upwards.
Due to the high captive oil level that never drains, air cannot displace the fluid in the pickup tube. Therefore, the pickup tube retains dirty fluid during an oil change. This leaves almost half a quart of liquid sandpaper in the pan and pickup tube that pollutes the new oil.
The factory pan uses a drain plug that threads into a welded bung that protrudes inwards. This bung blocks oil from completely draining once it hits the top of the threaded bung.
Duramax oil pans use an RTV-style liquid gasket that must fully seal to prevent leaks. Poorly designed pans with an improper sealing surface can result in leaks or damage from strands of RTV falling in, clogging the oil pickup tube, or jamming the pump.
Borrowing from decades of reliable military development, the CoolRunner uses an OE-style full-length squeeze gap that runs the entire inner perimeter of the pan. This precision-machined feature prevents small RTV strands from breaking off, falling into the sump, and damaging your engine.
All Banks lubrication cooling products are die-cast, not sand-cast like some competitors. Made with far greater precision, a die-cast part is denser, smoother, and has virtually no porosity compared to the equivalent sand-cast part.
Sand-cast parts often retain the sand they were molded with. Sand is an abrasive material that is bad for bearings and cylinder walls. In other words, you don’t want sand in your oil. Finally, our long, thin cooling fins are only possible with a die-cast process. Although this process costs more, it's worth it.

"Very high quality product. Excellent instructions hardware and sealant included."
"3 hours later……. 2018 L5P 3500 Lower oil pan install. It does not slip it like everyone’s video. I removed all the axle bolts, let it hang, and pulled down on the passenger side to gain another inch. Still not enough. The axle does not drop on the driver’s side; there is a big mounting knuckle holding the driver side against the frame, which is what I needed to drop. That might have gotten me enough clearance if I loosened it. Then I thought I would try an old school trick, jack up the transmission pan to raise the engine. It worked. So, on my 2018, I rotated the pan to about 2 o’clock until I got past the damn oil pickup tube then, rotate it in place. Do multiple dry runs to make sure you can do it without smearing the RTV. Otherwise, pretty simple on ramps. Oil runs down for hours, make sure you wipe right before install."
"Awesome oil pan, well designed very nice looking and high quality. Very reasonably priced for what you get. Install is simple enough, and their support is amazing. Texted customer service with a question and got a response quickly (and it was after their hours!) Thanks Eric!"
"Challenging install, but worth it. Good to know that I can now get all the old engine oil out during service."
"Your pan looks great but when you offer free shipping. It means you don't charge for shipping. I will buy the rest of my stuff for my truck somewhere else. I thought you were a good company to buy stuff from. Thanks Terry"
"Excellent engineering and product manufacturing with high quality machining and perfect fitment. Installed on my 17 chevrolet 2500HD L5P."
"This oil pan for my L5P Duramax was an easy upgrade. I installed this oil pan in my garage from my creeper. The only thing I did that was different from the outstanding installation instructions was I used a puddy knife to break the seal vs the supplied seal breaking tool to separate the oil pan from the upper pan housing. This project took me about 5 hours using only hand tools and working from my back. If I was to do it another time I could easily cut the time down almost in half."
"very nice product and design, can't wait to get it installed."
"From order to doorstep it was under a week. I enjoyed the how to videos and it really got my confidence up to install it myself. Everything went as the video showed until I went to put the pan in. It wouldn’t fit. I had to lower the differential by taking it off the frame mount to get the clearance I needed. I did this job on my drive way on ramps. I wonder if it would have gone as the video showed if the tires would have been hanging down on a lift. Once that was done it all went smoothly. The pan is x 10 better than the stock pan. Banks oil pans are what Chevy should have on their trucks from the factory. After seeing the quality of the stock one I’m glad I went ahead and swapped it out. The job took me about 6 hours. I had fun."
